However, these dental restorations are typically used when a tooth has a large filling exceeding the natural tooth structure. In addition, a dentist may advise you to get a dental crown if you previously had canal therapy, or a combination of a root canal and dental filling. You can get a dental crown for cosmetic reasons too. For instance, you can get a gold dental crown, for an extra sparkle in your smile.

First, the dentists start by applying local anesthetic near the tooth that requires a crown. Even if you’ve had a root canal and the nerve endings in that tooth are dead in a sense, the dentist will still use an anesthetic. The instruments used to get the crown in place come close the gingivitis tissue making anesthetic necessary. After numbing your gum, the dentist then fabricates the dental crown using the arches of your maxillary and mandibular arches. This is a major step because the crown must match your dental structure to the highest degree. Depending on the crown chosen, the dentist may also match several aspects of your teeth. For example, if you go with a full ceramic or porcelain fused meal crown (PFM), the dentist must match the color shade of your teeth. However, for other crowns, such as gold crowns, this is not necessary.

While the dentist prepares the crown, the dental assistant works on alginate impressions for both your upper and lower dental arches. These impressions are poured into a mold, to get a stone impression of your teeth. The mold is what the dentist uses to create a precise crown for your teeth. Nevertheless, since the crown takes quite some time to fabricate, the dentist prepares a temporary crown you can use before the permanent one arrives from the laboratory. He makes a little impression of the teeth in the same area as the tooth that needs a crown, as well as an impression of the opposing arch. These impressions are used to prepare the temporary crown. However, if you need a crown for your front teeth, the dentist may ask you to go to the laboratory so that the technicians there can get a shade of your surrounding teeth.

The dental crown is a hollow imitation of your tooth and fits into your tooth like a cap. However, it is made such that it fits around the tooth securely keeping out bacteria and other debris from the real tooth. While waiting for the dental crown, the dentist may place a rubber dam over the tooth to hold securely in place old filling material and tooth structure. The rubber dam also keeps water from dripping into your mouth. Then the dentist proceeds to prepare your tooth for the crown. This involves chipping away precise amounts of the tooth and feeling material from the tooth. If tooth decay is discovered during this process, the decay is removed, and a composite core is placed on the tooth. The crown is then placed, thus your new tooth.

Dental Crowns Dubai

If you have a tooth or teeth that have become severely damaged or decayed, it is important to restore their structure, strength, and function to improve your facial & smile aesthetics and boost your confidence. The dental crown procedure can be a great solution for patients with weakened or traumatized tooth / teeth. Cosmetically, dental crowns are tooth-shaped, natural-colored coverings applied over the tooth’s surface to restore its shape and size, strength, hide surface imperfections and/or rejuvenate the tooth’s appearance.

Today porcelain, ceramic, and porcelain-metal mix dental crowns, offered at most aesthetic dental clinics, are custom matched to the color of your existing teeth and are designed specifically for your smile in order to provide the most accurate, aesthetically pleasing results. These ceramic restorations, when cemented into proper place, encase the entire misshapen or severely discolored teeth, thereby giving you a bright and sparkling smile. Dental crowns are used to cover dental implant to comfortably work together with your existing natural teeth. They also act as a protective cover, protecting a weak tooth from further damage or to hold together parts of a fractured tooth.

One of the most obvious advantages is that this capping of the tooth looks, feels, and functions like your natural teeth and restores your overall bite strength, thereby improving your ability to bite down comfortably. If crafted accurately, a dental crown can help your upper and lower teeth to meet properly and maintaining a proper, balanced bite.

The risks associated with the placement of dental crowns include an increased sensitivity to heat and cold. Since your newly crowned tooth still has a nerve in it, you may experience sensitivity to cold and hot temperatures on the tooth following crown placement. Nerve damage is another potential risk associated with this procedure. The preparation of the tooth for a crown can lead to dental nerve damage. In this case, the complete removal of dental nerves (root canal therapy) is unavoidable. Other common risks may include loosening of crown or the loss of a crown. Loosening of crowns can be caused by a deterioration of the dental cement used to attach the crown to the abutment.

If the crown is not fitted correctly to your tooth, bacteria can easily grow between a space in the tooth and crown and further decay of the tooth under the crown may develop. Crowns may become so loose that they fall off. Porcelain-metal mix crowns may fracture, chip or break, needing the crown replaced with a whole new crown. Other possible complications may include risk of the carious infections, gingivitis, bleeding around the site of the crown placement and reactions to anesthesia used to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues during the procedure.

Dental crowns are a good option to consider for patients whose tooth has sustained severe damage. It is also an ideal solution to yellow or discolored teeth. Dental crowns also serve as an alternative to pulling the loose, chipped or cracked tooth or replacing it with a prosthetic tooth. Patients who grind their teeth, are unable to comfortably chew food or/and whose bite is not aligned properly can benefit from dental crowns. Patients who have undergone a root canal will need a dental crown. People with an especially large dental filling may need a dental crown to preserve their major tooth.

Those who have lost their teeth to a traumatic injury or periodontal disease can have crowns together with dental implants or dental bridges. Most importantly, dental crowns may only be recommended when the patient has healthy dental structure and gums to support the crown. Healthy gums anchor crowns firmly in place and ensure most effective cementation of the crown.

In today’s technologically advanced world, there is no need to live with missing, damaged or stained teeth, which not only decrease your ability to chew food properly but also ruin your self-image and self-confidence. Porcelain (or dental ceramic) dental crowns can fix affliction of tooth structure, improve your facial appearance and return your smile aesthetics. Porcelain is a particular type of ceramic that is fabricated by stacking and firing.

Porcelain Dental Crowns in Dubai – Cosmetically, porcelain dental crowns are natural-colored caps that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth. The crowns are fitted over the damaged tooth’s surface using dental cement, making the underlying tooth strong and most natural-looking. Also referred to as all-ceramic restorations, the demand for these crowns has rapidly increased over the past decade due to their life-like translucency, bio-compatibility, strong mechanical properties as well as strength and durability characteristics.

These metal-free restorations may be more suitable for patients with metal allergies. It can be the treatment of choice for people who grind and clench their teeth (medically known as bruxism). These restorations are ideal in situations where dental decay has destroyed most of the original tooth, or in cases of acute traumatic dental injuries and severe enamel erosion. There are various types of all-porcelain crowns.

  • Feldspathic porcelain – The traditional porcelain often touted as the most beautiful porcelain.
  • The Empress Crown – The pressed glass, all-ceramic restorations.
  • Zirconia Crowns – The ultimate premium metal-free alternative.
  • E-Max Crowns – Known for its toughness and durability, it is fabricated from a single block of lithium disilicate ceramic, a high quality material.
  • The Procera Crown – Known for its exceptional strength.
  • The Lava Crown – A combination of modern and traditional techniques.
  • The InCeram Crown – Made of very dense and tough aluminous porcelain.

One of the most obvious advantages is that porcelain dental crowns look far more natural and the most cosmetically pleasing than the other types. They can be ideal for front teeth that have been weakened by decay or traumatized or having discolored fillings.  They improve your facial & smile aesthetics as well as restore tooth structure, strength, and function of your teeth.  Porcelain dental crowns, when cemented properly, can protect what is left of the tooth.  They may help a dental implant to comfortably work together with the remaining healthy teeth or hold a denture or bridge firmly in place. If crafted correctly, these crowns can help your upper and lower teeth to meet properly and thus maintain a proper, balanced bite. Most importantly, the problem of a dark line at the edge of the gums, a common problem with metal-fused crowns, is eliminated.

With the use of advanced processing technologies such as hot pressing and CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacture), combined with the development of stronger porcelain materials and recent breakthroughs in adhesives, porcelain dental crowns produce more aesthetically pleasing results than metal-fused dental crowns.

The biggest disadvantage of porcelain dental crowns is that they don’t have enough strength to withstand the tremendous biting forces. They are less durable than other types of restorations and are more prone to cracking or breaking.  These restorations are used mostly for the front teeth and not usually recommended for molars and premolars since they are not designed to support a lot of biting force and chewing. Placing these crowns require very sophisticated bonding technique which isn’t generally taught in dental schools. Another disadvantage of porcelain dental crowns is to do with their cost.

Dental Crowns Cost – Porcelain dental crowns are more expensive than any other option. The high quality material, the time needed to produce ceramic crowns and the requirement of a skilled dental expert to fit these caps also increase their cost. The cost of the crowns is charged according to the number of teeth covered by the caps.

Dental crowns are considered a cosmetic dental procedure. They are often used to protect weakened teeth from further damage. For example, a cracked or broken tooth can break even further without the protection of a dental crown. In terms of cosmetic surgery, a crown can be used to hide the appearance of discolored and misshapen teeth. In all honesty, your smile is the first thing that people notice. Therefore, you want your smile to be beautiful. Crown placement typically involves more than one professional. A prosthodontist makes the crowns for you and an oral surgeon places the crowns.

Prior to receiving dental crowns, you need to understand who is a good candidate and who is not. If you suffer from any form of periodontal disease, crowns are not the answer. Crowns do not stop the spread of a periodontal disease. Therefore, your dentist will typically not recommend a crown if you have an oral disease. It is not recommended that you get crowns if you currently go through radiation therapies that occur around the head or neck area. Make sure that you go through with a full dental examination so that your dentist can determine if the placement of crowns is right for you.

Dental crowns cover the tooth down to the gum line. Therefore, if the gums recede it can reveal the tooth, or partial tooth underneath. The crown is shaped like a tooth and can be created to match the color of your teeth so that they have a more natural look. This dental procedure typically lasts at least seven years. However, as time goes by the crown can deteriorate meaning that you will have to go back to the dentist to have them fixed or redone. Therefore, the placement of dental crowns can get expensive.

The dentist will prepare your teeth before you receive your dental crowns. If your tooth is badly decayed, the dentist may recommend a root canal prior to the placement of your crowns. A root canal will prevent the tooth from decaying even more. However, a root canal is not a necessary procedure prior to the place of a crown. If necessary, the dentist will file the tooth down before placing the crown to ensure a secure fit. An impression of your teeth is made and sent to the lab so that your crowns are designed to fit properly. After the placement of your crowns, you should not feel any discomfort or pain and you will be able to use them as you would your normal teeth.

During the preparation of a tooth for a dental crown, you will typically require two visits to your dentist. The first step will involve the examination and preparation of the tooth, while the second visit will involve placement of the permanent crown.

First Visit : Examining and Preparing the Tooth – During the first visit to prepare the dental crown, the dentist may take several X-Rays in order to check the roots of the tooth that will receive the crown, as well as the surrounding bone.

If the tooth has suffered extensive decay or if there is a risk of injury or infection of the pulp of the tooth, a root canal may be first performed. This will require a few additional visits to the dentist. Before starting to place your crown, the dentist will anesthetize or numb the tooth as well as the gum tissue surrounding the tooth. Next, the doctor will file the tooth receiving the crown down along the chewing surface and sides to create room for the crown.

The amount to remove will depend on the type of crown. For instance, all-metal crowns are thinner and therefore require less removal of the tooth structure than their all-porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal counterparts. If, on the other hand, a large area of the tooth is missing due to damage or decay, the dentist will build up the tooth using filling material which will provide the crown with support.

Once they have reshaped your tooth, the dentist will use a putty or paste to make an impression of the tooth that will receive the crown. They will also make impressions of the teeth above and below the crown in order to ensure that the crown does not affect your bite. They will then send the impressions to a dental lab at which the crown will be manufactured. The crown will typically be sent back to the dentist’s office within 2-3 weeks.

If the crown is made out of porcelain, the dentist will also select the shade that matches closely the color of the neighboring teeth. During this visit, the dentist will make a temporary crown to protect and cover the prepared tooth while the crown is being made. Temporary crowns are typically constructed out of acrylic and held in place with temporary cement.

Second Visit : Receiving the Permanent Dental Crown – During your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the color and fit of the permanent crown. If everything is acceptable, they may use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and thereafter cement the new crown permanently in place.

Because temporary dental crowns are designed to provide a temporary fix until your permanent crown is ready, it is important to observe certain precautions. Avoid sticky or chewy foods such as caramel or chewing gum which tend to grab or pull the crown off. You should also minimize the use of the side of your mouth that has the temporary crown by shifting the bulk of your chewing to the other side.

Types of Crowns : These are some of the most often used types of dental crowns:

  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns – Look like your natural teeth but wear and tear over time.
  • Gold crowns – They offer increased durability but not much aesthetic appeal.
  • Zirconium crowns – the best choice for front teeth, if you can afford them.
  • Procera crowns – Metal free, look like your natural teeth, getting more and more popular.
  • All resin crowns – Less expensive than zirconium, another good choice for front teeth.
